In Section 2 an overview of a significant number of contributions in various types of multicriteria routing models will be presented. The following section describes a novel bi-level hierarchical multicriteria routing optimisation model for multiservice networks and its application to a video traffic routing problem. Finally, in Section 4 we outline some conclusions and future trends in this research area. Overview of Evolution in Telecommunication Networks Concerning technological evolution it can be said, from a historical perspective, that major evolutions in telecommunication networks have been centred around two main principles of information transfer, namely ‘circuit switching’ (typical of classical telephone networks) and ‘packet switching’ (typical of Internet).

A multiobjective shortest path model with constraints for computing packet stream routes in a given area of Internet is proposed in [Beugnies and Gandibleux, 2003], using objective functions of min-sum and max-min type. [Beugnies and Gandibleux, 2006] describe a multiobjective routing model for the Internet using a multiobjective shortest path formulation that uses as path metrics total average delay, hop-count and residual bandwidth; an exact algorithm for calculating the set of efficient solutions for connections from one node to all the other nodes and a selection procedure based on a weighted Chebyshev distance to the ideal point, are developed.
