In dry regions of the West, where soils tend to be alkaline, salt-tolerant plants are often the best choice because the ground may contain high levels of salt, either naturally or because of irrigation with water high in salts. Soils that have a high salt content can cause plant roots to dry out because water actually moves out of the roots and into the soil. High salt levels also degrade soil structure, and very alkaline conditions chemically destroy soil organic matter. See Ground Covers for Seaside Sites on page 110 for a list of salt-tolerant plants.
Whether you’re planting a single species of ground cover or combining several, look for foliage colors and textures that contrast with or complement one another. Ground covers usually are meant to provide a soothing, fairly uniform background in the garden, but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring. It’s surprising how variable allgreen foliage can be, and how interesting a planting can be just because of foliage color. Leaves can be chartreuse, light green, deep rich green, bluegreen, silver-green, or silver.
42 Creating Combinations Drifts, of course, are the most common ground cover planting pattern. They can be any size, from one plant to a hundred or more, and can be planted with a single species or several different ones. Although traditional ground cover monocultures make sense in some cases, other planting options are more exciting. Think of ground covers as the rugs of your garden. You probably decorate different rooms with different colors and patterns of carpet, so why not do that in your garden?
