In dry regions of the West, where soils tend to be alkaline, salt-tolerant plants are often the best choice because the ground may contain high levels of salt, either naturally or because of irrigation with water high in salts. Soils that have a high salt content can cause plant roots to dry out because water actually moves out of the roots and into the soil. Whether you’re planting a single species of ground cover or combining several, look for foliage colors and textures that contrast with or complement one another. Ground covers usually are meant to provide a soothing, fairly uniform background in the garden, but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring. It’s surprising how variable allgreen foliage can be, and how interesting a planting can be just because of foliage color. Leaves can be chartreuse, light green, deep rich green, bluegreen, silver-green, or silver.
